A stone massage uses stones, sometimes heated, to massage the body. The hardness of the stones allows the therapist to address specific problem areas with more detailed work or deeper pressure.
Basalt stones of various sizes, shapes and weights are used throughout and heated in water.
The following are some key points to remember when administering a Hot Stone Massage:
- Hot Stones are not to be used for massage of pregnant clients.
- Any neurological conditions resulting in altered sensation or temperature perception are a contraindication for Hot Stone massage.
- Clients taking any prescription medications, which alter the perception of temperature, must not have a Hot Stone Massage.
- Always test the temperature of the stones before placing them on your Client.
- Clearly ask your Client to inform you if at anytime the stones become too warm.
- Make sure to be receptive to feedback from your client regarding the sensation of heat from the hot stones.
- Observe the skin’s reaction to the Hot Stones, cool stones if skin becomes red and hot.
- Never massage the stones on the face or feet as they are porous and may absorb bacteria.
- Clean the Hot Stone Warmer with soap and water thoroughly and disinfect it.
- Clean the stones with soap and water thoroughly, disinfect with sanitizer and dry. Information provided by the Leading Spas of Canada Standards & Practices Committee
