The International Design Biennial in Liège is a major event in Belgium, in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine area and beyond the borders. It has four important characteristics. Launched in 2002 by the Province of Liège in a region of industrial tradition, the Biennial of Liège has chosen from the beginning a cultural approach in its broadest sense: the education to the design view and culture remains a major challenge. The economic and commercial aspects are brought out in close collaboration with the non-profit-making organization Wallonie Design, the Euregional Platform “Recentre” and the shops in Liège through the “Shopping Tour”. The historic dimension makes the different editions richer; “Design” is an avant-garde attitude of the end of the 19th century or the 20th century as well as an iconic notion of the beginning of the 21st century. Straightaway the Biennial of Liège wanted to be open to the young and multidisciplinary designers. Design includes here visual arts, architecture, fashion, music or gastronomy… Each edition of the Biennial has a major theme, which enables interesting confrontations according to the approaches and the techniques: “mobile and flexible”, “colours”, “personality and work of G. Serrurier-Bovy”… The different events of the Biennial dynamize the whole city and a region. Museums, private galleries, alternative places, exceptional mansions, public spaces are used. They add more interactivity and dialogue to design meetings that a single venue wouldn’t have.
